Most commonly played in Southern Africa especially in Botswana, South Africa and
Lesotho,
Morabaraba is a traditional two-player
strategy board game.It is reported that Morabaraba boards carved in rock are dated to be
at
least 800 years old, therefore indicating
a non-European origin.
It has some similarities to the Twelve Men's Morris, a variation on
the Roman board game Nine Men's Morris.
In this European game, the counters are most commonly referred to as men (mills), but in
the
South African game the counters are referred
to as cows, the game being particularly popular amongst youth especially young men and
those
herding cattle.
1. Morabaraba is played on a board made of 3 nested squares or triangles with points
at the
corners and in the middle of each side of
the squares. Lines are drawn to indicate permitted moves.
2. Each player has to have 12 tokens the colour of their choice. In Botswana many
things
can
be used, for example bottle cans,
stones, burned wood pieces, beads. These will start off the board.
3. The Players rolls the dice or spin a coin to decide on who begins the game.
Play steps
1. The idea is to try placing 3 of their tokens in a line at the first phase of the
game
also, thereon takes turns to place 1 token onto
an empty space per turn.
2. Upon forming a line of 3 tokens, they can capture or collect any one of the
opponent's
tokens from the game, except those already in a
line or sequence of 3. However if the opponent only has tokens in lines of 3, these
can be
taken.
3. If two lines of 3 tokens are formed by placing a single token, only one of the
opponent’s
token can be captured.
4. Once a token has been captured, from the board, it cannot be replayed.
5. The next phase begins when all the tokens have been placed on the board. Players
take
turns to move their tokens to an adjacent empty
spaces, following the play lines indicated trying to form lines of 3.
6. A player cannot break their own line of 3 tokens and then in the next turn, move
their
token back to reform the line.
7. In the final phase of the game, when a player has only 3 tokens remaining, they
may move
their token to any available space on the board.
8. To win the game, a player must reduce their opponent to 2 tokens.
9. A win can also be achieved if an opponent cannot move.
